How to budget when you don't have anything

When you are just starting out, you probably don't have all the necessities in life. You need to make money, and use that money toward buying all those necessities. But is there a certain order? Yes, there definitely is!

You probably know parts of the order already because some of them seem obvious, but you probably haven't thought about it before. You either acquired stuff already, or already bought some things if you went to college. Here are my top tips of what to buy in which order:

  1. The essentials - these are the list of things that you absolutely can't live without for long periods of time. Think about a paycheck, some are every two weeks, others are weekly, while others could be next day pay. If you aren't getting paid every day, then think about what you can and can't live without for the entire pay period. These things could be a bed, silverware, plates, coffee (for some people) and soap (please don't forget soap). Obviously the price to buy a bed is higher than a bar of soap, so either you use savings for it - if you have any - or you specifically look for a living condition that already has a bed.

  2. Upgrading the essentials - Maybe you already had a bed, but it was the most uncomfortable thing imaginable. Maybe you are using plastic silverware. After all the essentials are in your possession, the next purchases should be upgrading your essentials to the point you are happy. No point saving up for a TV when your lack of sleep is affecting your job.

  3. Not essential but you don't already have - What if you have a laptop/computer already but you want a TV, but you also don't have a couch. How do you decide which comes first? The couch - or at least chair - should be prioritized since you didn't have a place to sit prior, but you did already have a form of entertainment. Basically prioritize a solution that you don't have an answer to, instead of getting something fun to replace something you already have

  4. Upgrade the non-essentials - This could be getting a new TV, buying a new couch, or upgrading your computer. Things that you don't need for your job or your survival, but things that you really want replaced. For example, my 32 inch TV can only do 780p, which makes me sad since it's not great, but it's free so I won't be upgrading it until I own a bed.

  5. Decor - You might want to buy decor earlier than 5th, especially since the other ones are expensive, but it's always a good idea to save up for furniture pieces and technology, rather than decor, but decor makes everyone feel better in their own space, so this one can go anywhere, just be mindful of saving up for the more expensive items.
